Ole Bull 10-krone commemorative coin 2010

PaveikslėlisPaveikslėlis

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ole Bull, a special edition circulation coin will be issued by Norges Bank on 5 February. The coin is legal tender and will be issued at nominal value.

Ole Bornemann Bull was born on 5 February 1810 in Bergen and died on 17 August 1880. A celebrated Norwegian violinist and composer of international renown, his impassioned dedication to traditional Norwegian folk music played a prominent role in the development of a distinctively Norwegian culture following the dissolution of the union with Denmark in 1814.

In the course of his long career, Ole Bull travelled extensively, performing all over the world, and composed a total of more than 70 works, including Recuerdos de Habana, Et Sæterbesøg, Sætergjentens søndag, I ensomme Stunde and Polacca Guerriera. He also supported and encouraged young Norwegian classical musicians such as Edvard Grieg, Erika Nissen, Agathe Backer Grøndahl and Rikard Nordraak.

Norges Bank marks 100th anniversary of universal suffrage

Norges Bank will issue a 10-krone special edition circulation coin to mark the 100th anniversary of universal suffrage in 2013. The coin will be put into circulation on International Women's Day, 8 March.

"In June 2013, it will be 100 years since the Norwegian parliament decided to introduce universal suffrage and women gained the right to vote on an equal footing with men. This is an event we wish to commemorate", says Leif Veggum, Acting Director of the Cashier's Department. He adds that the motif on the 10-krone coin symbolises the protracted, difficult struggle to achieve women's suffrage.

The coin's obverse features the portrait of H.M. King Harald V designed by Ingrid Austlid Rise, designer at Det Norske Myntverket AS (Mint of Norway). This motif has been featured on all special edition circulation coins in recent years.

A competition was held for the design of the coin's reverse. The winning motif with the motto "Joining forces" was designed by illustrator and graphic designer Siri Dokken. The left side of the coin features four female figures with their arms outstretched pushing against the edge of a surface making up the other half of the coin. Commenting on her motif, Dokken says that democracy is a bottom-up movement and that to vote is to join forces to move something together, to create change, move axes and centres of gravity.

This commemorative coin will be in the same format as the ordinary 10-krone coin and will be legal tender.

The Suffrage Centenary is already underway and is being celebrated locally, nationally and internationally. Norges Bank is cooperating with the Suffrage Centenary Committee appointed by the government to organise the celebrations. The centenary celebrations will be officially launched in the form of a gala performance on 8 March at Kilden Performing Arts Centre in Kristiansand. To mark the coin's launch, Norges Bank will have a stand at the event where the coin will be displayed and where guests and the general public will be able to trade their loose change for this special edition circulation coin.

Bicentenary of the Norwegian Constitution 2014, 20-krone commemorative coin

This year, 2014, is the bicentenary year of the signing of the Norwegian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll. To mark this important event in Norway's history, Norges Bank is issuing a 20-krone special edition circulation coin on 16 February 2014. The coin is legal tender and will be issued at face value.

The Norwegian Constitution of 17 May 1814 laid the foundations for the development of democracy in Norway and has proved to be more durable than other constitutions drawn up at the same time in Europe. Today, the Norwegian Constitution is a unifying symbol of freedom, independence and democracy.

The commemorative coin issue is a collaboration between Norges Bank and the Storting's bicentenary organising committee. The aim of the bicentenary celebration is to raise awareness of what the Constitution means today and its importance for the development of democracy in Norway, to encourage participation and involvement in democratic institutions and to be an occasion for popular celebrations throughout Norway.

The anniversary motif on the coin's reverse was designed by the painter and illustrator Esther Maria Bjørneboe. The motif features Christian Magnus Falsen, in front and in profile, resting his gaze on successive, future generations of women, men and youth. They are portrayed in simplified profile, and symbolise the Norwegian Constitution's long history and the numerous modernisations it has undergone. The coin's denomination (20 KR) is placed to the right, with the text GRUNNLOVEN 1814 – 2014 (Constitution 1814-2014) at the bottom.
